Captioning Deliverable Formats

Caption files are formatted for the specific type of media player or distribution system they will be displayed on

Standalone Caption Files

A coded text file, formatted to work with a specific media player, publishing tool, or editing platform. Standalone caption files are for hosted video (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) and authoring platforms (Final Cut, Avid, Adobe Premiere, etc.). Common standalone caption formats include SRT, VTT, SCC, XML, and CCA.

Encoded Media Caption Files

Captions are encoded directly into the media file. These files can be in closed or open caption format. Encoded closed captions are added as a separate track to the media and can be turned on or off with a CC button. In open caption format, words are hard-coded into the video and will display no matter what media player is used. Common encoded media formats include MOV, MP4, WMV, and FLV.

Broadcast Caption Files

Closed caption files for broadcast content are delivered in special formats specified by the station or media outlet. In some cases, a high-quality encoded media file is provided. In other circumstances, a physical tape is encoded with the captions for direct input into the broadcast system.

Video Subtitling and Translation

Subtitles are generally used to provide on-screen translation for secondary languages. Our network of translation vendors offers subtitles for all common global languages. Subtitles are typically encoded into the video like open captions, but the style and format of the text may vary.

Word Wizards provides best-in-class text accuracy reports and data analysis for closed captioning systems and products. Our unique approach allows clients to understand the quality of captioning deliverables, compare accuracy between captioning vendors and products, and monitor closed caption performance using data driven metrics. Our analysis services have been used for caption performance tracking, product selection decision making, regulatory compliance monitoring, and system optimization for AI speech-to-text.
